Europe Trip (Salzburg, Austria #2)

7th April 2011
Early in the morning, we went out to explore the rest of the place. We first headed towards the morning market, which was opposite of Mirabell Palace. The market was crowded with many people and had its own specialty too.

Morning Market
Bread!
Fur. It was so smelly!
Large round cheese.
This is how they cut the cheese.
At first, I thought this was food for human. Wanted to buy but in the end
found out it was food for dog! Looks so delicious.
Spices?
We entered the Mirabell Palace (Schloss Mirabell) next. It has a horse fountain and a beautiful garden called Mirabellgarten. This palace was where the Do-Re-Mi song was sung in The Sound of Music. No entrance fee was needed. The palace opens from 8am to 6pm.

The horse fountain.
The garden! Can you feel the music in the air?
Next, we proceeded to Mozart's Residence (Mozart-Wohnhaus). It was the artist, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's place where he spent his childhood. Inside, there was his biography and his works. We did not stay there for long though. You can check the ticket price of the museum and the opening hours here [link].

His house!
We crossed over the Salzach River to the other side of the town using the Staatsbrücke Bridge, which is the main bridge of Salzburg.

We visited churches which names I do not know. Other than that, we visited Erzabtei St. Peter which is one of the oldest monasteries in German-speaking area. Around that area too were many big buildings we visited.

One of the places.
People playing large chess!
Fresh bread sold out fast! But we were able to grab some.
We headed towards Hohensalzburg Castle (Festung Hohensalzburg) which is situated on top of a small mountain. It is said to be one of the biggest medieval castles in Europe. To enter, one has to pay a fee. Along the way we saw some other interesting things. It was quite a climb up the mountain.

A cemetery.
There are tunnels in that wall!
Towards the entrance of the castle.
The view of Salzburg.
We then headed towards Nonnberg Abbey (Stift Nonnberg), which is a convent situated near to the castle. It is the oldest women's religious house situated in German-speaking area.

After finishing exploring the area, we went down and walked at the place that we had yet to cover. We reached Mozart's Birthplace (Mozart Geburtshaus) [link]. It has now turned into a museum.

We waited for one hour at a beautiful area for the night train to our next destination. My brother and I went into a small empty church. It was cold inside and the place had a rather good echo for singing. So, we sang inside.

What I discovered in this trip is that the cars here would stop and give way to pedestrians to walk. The drivers were polite. Same goes to the pedestrians. They would really wait until the light is green to cross the road even though there may be no car. Pretty good ethic they have.

Waited under this tree too. :D
